Hugh died June 22,2012 in AK. OBIT: Anchorage resident Hugh Zander Smith, 79, passed away at home after a lengthy illness on June 22, 2012. Hugh was born in Louisburg, North Carolina on September 7, 1932 to Hugh and Margaret Smith. He married Louise Sloan in December 1955. Hugh served in the National Guard before becoming active duty in the Army. In 1957 he was transferred to Fort Richardson and later was with Post Signal on Fort Richardson after leaving the Army. During this time he received his Electrical Contractors license number 136. His first company was Hugh Smith Electric. In 1968 Hugh and John Hollomon founded Wire Communications Inc. Wire Communications performed communications and electrical work statewide and international. Clients included oilfield, government and commercial contracts for forty five years. He became an Alaskan bush pilot in the sixties and had both private and commercial licenses. He enjoyed riding snow machines and did some completive racing. He hunted and fished around the State of Alaska and spent as much time as he could at the cabin. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Margaret Smith and brothers George Lee Smith and Bobby Smith. Hugh is survived by Louise Smith of the home, son Kenneth H. Smith and wife Ginger George-Smith, daughter Marjorie Kurtz and husband Steve Kurtz. Four grandsons Trenton Smith, Tyler Smith, Tanner Smith and Clay Kurtz all of Anchorage. Sisters Elizabeth Arnold and Peggy Tew of North Carolina and brother Mike Smith of Anchorage. Services will be held on July 3,2012 at 1:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 2610 East Northern Lights Blvd. in Anchorage with minister George Blair 111 officiating. Hugh's ashes will be spread at various locations in Alaska.
