Loy died July 27, 2003 in Odessa, Ector Co., TX. OBIT: Loy Hugh Mead, 76, our Daddy and Papaw, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, July 27, 2003. He was born November 22, 1927, to Leslie Mead and Ole Mae Allgood in Centerville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Faye; two brothers, Tommy and Lesly Mead; and a grandson, Jason HilI. Loy played football at Breckenridge High School in Breckenridge, Texas. He was an outstanding player and all-around athlete while attending Breckenridge High School. After his high school graduation, he was drafted into the Navy. While stationed at U.S. Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland, he played football at the quarterback position and was a NATC boxer, where he was successful competing in the welterweight division on the Navy?s boxing team. After moving to Odessa, Loy attended Odessa ColIege, where he received an Associates Degree and was co-captain of the OC Wrangler football team playing half-back. The Odessa College Wranglers won the Western Division championship two years in a row ? the two years of their existence, 1949 and 1950. Loy also was a six-time boxing champion in three different weight classes while boxing for the Odessa Golden Gloves. Loy married Pauline Murray in Lea County, New Mexico, on April 21, 1950. They ware married 25 years. Pauline ?Polly? Murray Mead passed away in November, 1983. Loy retired after 37 years with the Texas Electric Utilities Company (TU Electric). He is survived by his four daughters, Suzanne Smith and husband, Charlie, of Odessa, Johnnie Reed and husband, Dean, of Gardendale, Rhonda Graham and husband, Steve, of Odessa, Polly, Jr. ?Jimmie? Benton of Clyde, Texas; two sons, Audie Mead and wife, Evelyn, and Rocky Mead, both of Odessa; a sister, Betty Whitley of Midland; an uncle, Troy Allgood of Big Spring; grandchildren Robin Hill of Midland, Stephanie Graham of Odessa, Chris Reed and wife, Jennifer, of Mesquite, April Wheeler and husband, Jim, of Odessa, Lacy Williams and husband, James, of Midland, Debra Smith of Huntington Beach, California, Kyle Benton, Chad Mead, Audra Mead and Leslie Mead, all of Odessa; great-grandchildren, Jordyn Graham, Madison Malloy and Haley Reed; and numerous nieces and nephews. For those that knew and loved him, Loy had a generous spirit that will be forever remembered by the many he has helped throughout his life. He had a competitive nature and loved football and boxing, but his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were what he was most proud of. He took great pride in showing pictures of his loved ones to anyone and explaining the talents and accomplishments of each one. (John 14:27) Pallbearers will be Stephen Graham, Dean Reed, Charlie Smith, Chris Reed, Chad Mead and Joe Cortez. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30th, and services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Frank Wilson Funeral Home Chapel located at 4635 Oakwood in Odessa. Burial services will immediately follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas.
He married Pauline Murray April 21, 1950 in Lea Co., NM. Pauline died November 1983.
