Merton died July 6, 1996 in Kirkland, King Co., WA. OBIT: M.J. "Jack" Fender, 80, Kirkland, Wash., died Saturday, Jly 6, 1996, at Evergreen Hospice Center, Kirkland.
He was born Feb. 26, 1916, to C.M. "Monte" and Nolia Joy Fender at Prescott, Wash.
He settled in Coeur d'Alene in the early 30s and made his home here for 50 years. A civilian employee of the U.S. Navy at Farragut during World War II, he later worked for his father at the Fender Club Cigar in Coeur d'Alene and the Fender Sport Shop. He and his wife owned and operated a grocery store and dry cleaning route in Coeur d'Alene prior to his employment at Potlatch Forest Inc. He retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1977 and managed the Medicus Apartment complex until moving to Roseburg, Ore., in 1981. He moved to Kirkland, Wash., in 1989.
He served as exalted ruler and district deputy grand exalted ruler of the Coeur d'Alene Elks Lodge and was involved in the organization that brought hydroplane racing to Lake Coeur d'Alene.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marguerite, at home in Kirkland; sons and daughters-in-law . . . [two]; and three granddaughters and two grandsons.
He married Merry Marguerite Miles June 28,1938. Merry was born December 25, 1915 in Shoshone, Lincoln Co., ID. Merry died May 28, 2002 in Renton, King Co., WA. OBIT: Merry Marguerite Fender of Renton, formerly of Kirkland, died May 28, 2002, at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland. She was 86.
Mrs. Fender was born Dec. 25, 1915, in Shoshone, Idaho, graduated from high school in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 1934 and attended the University of Idaho in Moscow. She married M.J. ''Jack'' Fender on June 28, 1938.
Mrs. Fender enjoyed family events, writing poetry and corresponding with friends. According to her family, she was known for her sense of humor.
Her husband of 58 years died in 1996.
Survivors include her sons . . . [two]; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Crossroads Bible Church in Bellevue.
